The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is responding to the natural crisis in Tonga following the devastation caused by the volcanic eruptions on January 15 (2022).

The response effort is spearheaded by ADRA South Pacific with the support of ADRA Global Network and the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

ADRA is providing immediate cash grants to families so they can meet their most urgent needs, whether that is access to clean water, shelter, or food.

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Fiji is also mobilising assistance in the form of food kits and WASH kits, in collaboration with the  Fiji Mission of Seventh-day Adventists, to be shipped across to Tonga.

And because there is no ADRA office in Tonga, the ADRA regional office will again collaborate with the Tongan SDA Church Mission as per practice in previous disasters.

ADRA is exploring additional opportunities with other partners in Tonga who have the capacity to respond.

Communication limitations have delayed the development of specific plans based on expressed needs of the local communities impacted.

Some 84 per cent of the Tongan population have been affected by the disaster while 99 per cent of the people are being exposed to risks from the volcanic ashes.
