FIJI’S Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the Adoption Bill 2018 was needed to amend an outdated act known as the Adoption of Infant Act 1944.
While tabling the Bill in Parliament yesterday, he said the Bill provided for local and inter-country adoption and access to information regarding adoption matters.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said it regulated all matters pertaining to adoption, including its procedures and processes.
The Adoption of Infant Act 1944, which has been in existence for the last 74 years, he said did not cater for the current nature of adoption like the inter-country adoption.
The Bill if enacted would provide for local and inter-country adoption of children and access to information regarding adoption and related matters.
It will be tabled before the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights for further scrutiny before it was being brought back to Parliament for further reading.
