THE Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening childhood cancer care, with a $41million investment in Fiji’s first Radiotherapy and Cancer Treatment Centre and continued support for families battling the disease.
Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa made the announcement yesterday while speaking at the launch of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, saying improving outcomes for young patients required a stronger and more resilient health system.
“The ministry remains committed to strengthening early diagnosis, improving referral pathways, expanding specialist services and ensuring children have access to quality treatment regardless of where they live,” he said.
“Reliable information is equally important.
“Strengthening cancer registration and data collection enables us to better understand disease patterns, plan services effectively and continue improving patient outcomes.”
Mr Ravunawa said Government remained committed to improving cancer care through increased investment and partnerships.
“We are proud to support WOWS Kids Fiji through a $100,000 Government grant, assisting the organisation to continue delivering practical support to children and families across Fiji.
“In addition, the 2026–2027 National Budget includes $41million towards establishing Fiji’s first Radiotherapy and Cancer Treatment Centre.
“This represents one of the most significant investments in cancer care in our nation’s history.
“For many families, it will mean improved access to specialised treatment closer to home and reduced financial and emotional hardship.”
He said Government could not tackle childhood cancer alone, stressing that success depended on partnerships with organisations such as WOWS Kids Fiji, healthcare professionals, communities, churches, schools, businesses and development partners.
