Outgoing permanent secretary for health Dr James Fong says serving in the position was a privilege.

He has not sought reappointment upon the completion of his contract.

“As reported, I have not reapplied to be considered for renewal of contract and my immediate plans relate to family and personal concerns,” Dr Fong said.

“It has been a privilege to serve as permanent secretary for health after more than 30 years in the Fiji medical services.”

Dr Fong was confirmed as the PS for Health in 2020 and was instrumental to Fiji’s COVID-19 pandemic containment success.

“I am thankful to all those I have worked with both within and outside the health sector.

“I also commend the efforts of the various development partners I have had the honour to work with.

“There is much more that needs to be done to ensure sustained improvements in health and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services has the capacity and leadership to ensure this.”

Meanwhile, Public Service Commission (PSC) chairman Luke Rokovada confirmed that Dr Jemesa Tudravu would replace Dr Fong from Monday next week.
