Fiji needs to seriously consider an open sky policy in aviation and not be threatened by it.

And it must do that with all other countries, not only the United States.

The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) said Fiji could reengage with airlines such as Air India, Japan and Korean Airlines that used to service this route before.

“Other potential markets are China, Indonesia and other emerging markets in Asia and elsewhere,” the NCCI stated as it welcomed reports of major development projects and upgrading works earmarked for Nadi International Airport from this year until 2030.

“We can easily attract many more tourists from India and China with better and easier connectivity with international airlines.

“Fiji Airways is now on sound footing and should not be threatened.”

The NCCI said instead, the country will be “blessed with competition”, adding Fiji has the capacity and resources to attract millions of tourists annually.

It stated the volume of traffic through Nadi airport continued to grow.

“We have seen international and as well as domestic airports world over expanding with state of the art services and facilities.

“Fiji no doubt remains the hub of the South Pacific. As the hub, we’ll no doubt have many more passengers transiting, so for them it would be fitting to provide improved and international class facilities, including a transit hotel.”
