Parliament paid out $765,000 in political party grant to political parties in the last financial year, says Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

He was responding to queries from Opposition why allocations in the budget for independent bodies such as Parliament were reduced.

He said the budget allocation for Parliament had decreased by $1.5 million compared with the last financial year because they managed to iron out works that was not needed to be covered in this budget such as the payment of political party grant amounting to $765,000.

SODELPA member of Parliament Adi Litia Qionibaravi said she had noticed that allocations for independent bodies had decreased.

Parliament has a budget allocation of $7.1 million in the next financial year.
