EVACUEES at the 17 centres in the North that opened yesterday have applauded the prompt action by police and the operations emergency team headed by acting Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima.

The evacuees described the response by police as swift and timely.

Labasa evacuee Iliesa Seru said they contacted police at midday and by 2,30pm, the residents of Vulovi were evacuated to All Saint’s Secondary School.

“We are grateful and thankful to the operations team and the police for their quick response,” he said.

“Everytime it rains, we fear for our lives because of the flood that easily happens in our area and we have had bad experience.”

Terikano Takesau of Rabi Island shared similar sentiments. “Police has been helpful and the villagers of Tabwewa were evacuated on time with their assistance,” she said.

“The people of Rabi have also become aware about the importance of preparing themselves for the cyclone and natural disasters.”

The evacuation centres include six in Cakaudrove, six in Bua and five in Macuata.

Mr Rainima led a team to visit areas in Macuata.

He has urged members of the public to remain in doors.

The towns, he said would remain closed until clearance is given by the national DISMAC office.
