Caucau: Do your country proud

FORMER Flying Fijians winger Rupeni Caucau believes Fiji can create upsets at the upcoming Rugby World Cup and return home with a positive result.

Caucau, who played at the 2003 RWC congratulated the 32 players named by coach John McKee but reminded them to do their country proud.

“The message to them is that they are playing for their country and the jersey that they are wearing,” Caucau said.

“They have to play hard and we will be supporting them and will be watching them on the television.”

Caucau scored one of the best tries of the 2003 RWC against France in the opening pool match when he grabbed a huge miss-out pass from fullback Norman Ligairi inside the 22 metre territory and sped past Aurelien Rougerie who was regarded as one of Europe’s leading winger at that time and beat Imanol Harinordoquy who was one of Europe’s leading number 8s and then stepped inside fullback Nicolas Brusque for a clear run to the line.

He was later sin-binned in the fixture for punching French flanker Olivier Magne and received a two-match suspension.

Caucau returned for the final pool match against Scotland and scored two exquisite individual tries in the 22-20 loss. Nicknamed the “Bua Bullet” Caucau was generally regarded by both journalists and international players as the greatest attacking player in world rugby.

Caucau said while Fiji was in a tough pool, the side had the capability to overcome any opposition.

“Fiji is in a tough pool but I know that they don’t care which team they come across,” he said.

“Even though the opposition has the big-name players but they have the same things, they have two legs and two hands and so have we.”
