ALL that Kelerayani Raivakariri could salvage from her tiny corrugated-iron home were a few beddings.
Floodwaters that inundated Wainitogoru settlement over the past three days had swept everything the 70-year-old owned and also the belongings of her 12-year-old granddaughter.
The duo have been seeking shelter at a neighbour’s place since last Thursday.
When a team from this newspaper arrived at the settlement yesterday, neighbours were wading through floodwaters trying to rescue a few utensils that were floating in the dank water and trying to salvage whatever clothes that had gotten trapped inside their lean-to house.
Ms Raivakariri said their food was also destroyed in the flood and they had to depend on neighbours for meals.
“I really don’t know what to do at this stage because I don’t even have money with me to support my granddaughter,” she said.
“Our house has been flooded for the past three days and most of our belongings have been destroyed but then I managed to save a few beddings.”
Ms Raivakariri said her granddaughter had been under her care for the past seven years.
“I am supporting my granddaughter with whatever assistance I receive from social welfare every month but now I am trying to figure out what to do with our home after the floodwater recedes.
“My granddaughter and I are in need of help at this moment. We need food and other basic items to get us through because we are worried of the current weather.”
