THE Suva Tongan Church of Apitonga had its groundbreaking ceremony today for its first two-storey multipurpose hall for the Tongan community in Fiji.

Apitonga Church Steward, Kisione Finau said it was a milestone achieved by the Tongans.

“In the last four years we decided to develop this land and in the last four years we have been fundraising, Fiji, Tonga, United States, Australia and we have collected enough to build this multipurpose hall,” he said.

He said once the newly multipurpose hall would be established it would allow the Tongan community in Fiji, especially students of the                 University of the South Pacific (USP) to host any planned social activities as well as catering for their accommodation.

Mr Finau added constructions were likely to begin in a month’s time.
