THE coconut industry is very important to economic and social development in Fiji.

These were the words of Agriculture Minister Inia Seruiratu while launching the Coconut Development Program where he said over the years, it had become an important source of livelihood for rural and maritime people.

Mr Seruiratu said the industry had been on a decline since the 1970s.

“It’s resilience has encouraged this Government to continue to rehabilitate and develop he industry into a vibrant business to support as estimated 100,000 farmers who were dependent on it for their livelihood,” he said.
