Update: 3:21PM THERE is a need to change mindset among policymakers and to draw in ministers for finance and planning on the political discussion on climate change.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Minister for Climate Change and Environment, Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, noted this to Fiji’s COP23 presidency high-level champion for global climate action Inia Seruiratu during their meet in Dubai.

The two ministers also had a discussion on how climate change was impacting the two different regions – the Pacific Islands and the Arabian Gulf region.

Dr Al Zeyoudi congratulated and offered his support to Fiji for its achievement as the COP23 President at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bonn, Germany, last year.

Mr Seruiratu highlighted the vulnerability of Pacific Islands and the challenges faced by the agriculture sector with intensifying extreme events like flooding and drought.

“There is the critical need for effective climate change adaptation technologies and the need to strengthen overall resilience. This was of high priority for the vulnerable Pacific islands,” he said.
