A $90,000 investment from the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) is set to expand a $500,000-plus tourism asset in Ra, as a locally-owned eco-tourism venture moves to increase its accommodation capacity.
The loan, approved through TLTB’s Taukei Development Fund Facility, will finance the construction of two guest bure at Nanumi Au Eco Village in Navutulevu Village, Rakiraki.
The expansion is expected to strengthen the venture’s ability to accommodate visitors and generate greater economic returns from the tourism lease while creating opportunities for the local community.
TLTB chief executive officer Solomone Nata formally handed over the loan agreement to Nanumi Au Eco Village director Kolinio Samuta, a member of mataqali Natilivaira, yavusa Natiliva of Navutulevu Village.
He said the investment demonstrated the potential for iTaukei entrepreneurs to turn customary land and local resources into viable businesses.
“This is one of the less common business ventures undertaken by iTaukei entrepreneurs, and I commend Mr Samuta for demonstrating the immense potential that exists within the eco-tourism sector,” Mr Nata said.
He said the initiative showed how indigenous communities could sustainably use their resources to create economic opportunities while protecting their cultural and environmental heritage.
Nanumi Au Eco Village has transformed land formerly used for sugar cane farming into a tourism destination offering cultural and nature-based experiences.
The venture operates largely on solar energy and offers village tours, mangrove exploration, waterfall and nature excursions, sevusevu and kava ceremonies, kayaking and other outdoor activities.
The name Nanumi Au, meaning ‘Remember Me’, reflects the venture’s focus on providing visitors with authentic Fijian cultural experiences while contributing to sustainable economic development in the community.
