ABOUT 80 per cent of deaths in Fiji are caused by non-communicable diseases and Fiji continues to experience alarming trends in health risk factors including obesity, hypertension, high blood glucose and increased alcohol consumption.

This was the word from In-Sang Jung, deputy chief of mission at the Korean embassy, to participants at the World Health Organization’s workshop on Strengthening Health Promoting Schools in Nadi yesterday.

He said the Korean government was committed to assisting Fiji and the Pacific in addressing the NCD crisis in the region.

He said the Korean government reopened its Korea International Co-operation Agency (KOICA) Fiji office as a Pacific regional centre which oversaw its programs in 12 South Pacific countries.
