PRIME Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has hailed the $35million Tropik Wood Industries carriage sawmill project in Drasa, Lautoka as a major step in transforming Fiji’s forestry sector and unlocking greater value from mahogany resources.
Mr Rabuka officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, describing the investment as a sign of confidence in Fiji’s economic future and its potential to compete in international timber markets.
“Today marks a significant milestone, not only for Tropik Wood Industries and Fiji Pine Group, but for the future of the forestry sector and our broader economic transformation journey,” Mr Rabuka said.
The new sawmill will allow Tropik Wood Industries to diversify into hardwood processing, an area it has not previously undertaken, while creating opportunities in manufacturing, skills development and employment.
“With an investment of approximately $35million, this project reflects confidence in the future of Fiji’s forestry and our ability to compete in international markets.”
Mr Rabuka said the project aligned with the Government’s vision to build a resilient and prosperous economy by ensuring natural resources were sustainably managed and used to create long-term benefits.
“By strengthening our timber processing capacity, Fiji will retain greater economic value within the country, create more opportunities for local businesses, and generate stronger returns from our forest resources,” he said.
Fiji Pine Group chief executive officer Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure said the sawmill would improve efficiency, promote value addition, support employment and strengthen sustainability in the forestry industry.
