A total of 246 live rounds of 5.56mm ammunition were voluntarily handed over to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces in Nausori as part of ongoing joint security operations with police.
The RFMF confirmed the ammunition was surrendered on May 16 and said several magazines and magazine pouches were also handed over and placed into military custody for further assessment and investigation.
According to the military, the discovery and surrender resulted directly from joint operations currently being conducted by the RFMF and the Fiji Police Force.
“The discovery and surrender of the live rounds came about as a direct result of the ongoing joint security operations currently being conducted by the RFMF and the Fiji Police Force,” military commander Ro Jone Kalouniwai said.
The military commended those involved for voluntarily surrendering the ammunition, saying such cooperation helped strengthen national security and public safety.
“The RFMF acknowledges and commends the responsible action taken by those involved in voluntarily coming forward. Such cooperation greatly contributes to maintaining national security, public safety, and community confidence,” the statement said.
The RFMF also urged members of the public with information relating to illegal arms, ammunition or military equipment to immediately report it to security authorities.
“The unauthorized possession of arms and ammunition poses a serious threat to national security and public safety.”
The military assured the public that all information received would be treated confidentially and handled through the appropriate law enforcement processes.
The RFMF said it remained committed, alongside the Fiji Police Force and other stakeholders, to ensuring the safety, security and stability of Fiji.
