In a display of sheer determination and grit, 18-year-old Venasio Savea emerged triumphant at the Coca-Cola Games 2024, clinching the gold medal in the senior boys discus event.

Hailing from the serene district of Juju on Rotuma, Savea’s journey to victory was marked by weeks of relentless training and an unwavering commitment to his craft.

Savea’s winning throw of 44.15 metres not only secured him the coveted gold but also etched his name in the annals of the Rotuman athletic history.

“I was not really expecting to win the gold medal,” Savea said. “I would say it was very tough, and I was nervous also.”

Savea gave a moving tribute to his younger brother, David, the 2022 Games winner, by dedicating his victory to him. Sadly, David’s life was taken too soon after his historic victory.

“I dedicate this to my younger brother, David Savea, who participated in the Games in 2022, and brought home the gold medal,” Savea proudly said.

As Venasio Savea returns to Rotuma with the gold medal adorning his chest, he carries with him not only the glory of victory but also the legacy of his brother.
