The race is on to decide who will lead the country for the next four years. President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere officially handed the Writ for the 2022 General Election to Electoral Commission chairperson Mukesh Nand at State House yesterday.

While issuing the writ, the President formally instructed Mr Nand to hold the polls on December 14, 2022, for 55 members of Parliament.

He also directed that all voter registration must cease by 6pm October 31 (yesterday) and all nominations for political party candidates to be received by midday November 14.

Ratu Wiliame also said all pre-poll and postal voting must be conducted prior to election date.

He instructed the chair to endorse the names of the candidates elected as members of Parliament and return the writ by December 20, 2022.

Meanwhile, at a media conference yesterday, Electoral Commission chair Mr Nand said as of October 28, a total of 692,918 Fijians were registered for the 2022 General Election and nine political parties were eligible to contest the 55-seat Parliament.

The nine political parties are the All People’s Party, FijiFirst, Fiji Labour Party, National Federation Party, New Generation Party, Social Democratic Liberal Party, The People’s Alliance, Unity Fiji and We Unite Fiji Party.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem at a media conference yesterday said one independent candidate would contest the 2022 General Election.

He said more details on the candidate would be announced later this week.
