We can’t win without the ball.

That’s the message from Fiji Airways Flying Fijians assistant coach and former Fijian international Tabai Matson to the players who face Wallabies in their opening match of the 2019 Rugby World Cup on Saturday.

Matson said they needed to win the ball to be able to win.

“In order to get our attacks right, we need to do well at the breakdowns,” he said.

“You look at Pocock and Hooper and the other world-class players they have, so if we don’t attack right, it will be a long day for us.”

Matson said the breakdowns had been their focus for the past two months. “You just can’t win a game without the ball.”

The team had another gruelling session at the Abashiri Sports Training Field ground yesterday under the watchful eye of Matson and other coaching staff members. Much of the work done in that session was centred on defending and winning possession from breakdowns.

Fiji plays Australia at the Sapporo Dome at 4.45pm this Saturday.
