The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has cancelled 159 driving licences and suspended another 245 since January this year as it intensifies enforcement against motorists who disregard road safety rules.
LTA acting chief executive officer Makitalena Drova said the authority had also issued 2,325 first warnings, 669 second warnings and 393 final warnings, while 115 drivers had undergone counselling.
Ms Drova warned that motorists who continued to put other road users at risk would face consequences.
“The Authority will not hesitate to take action against drivers who fail to comply with traffic rules. We have taken action, and we will continue to do so,” she said.
“No driver should believe they can put other people’s lives at risk without consequences.”
Ms Drova said the figures reflected the authority’s continued focus on enforcement and holding motorists accountable for traffic violations.
“These figures demonstrate that enforcement remains a priority. We will continue to hold drivers accountable and take the necessary action against those who disregard road safety requirements,” she said.
She urged motorists to avoid distractions, refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, wear seatbelts and ensure all passengers were properly restrained.
Ms Drova also stressed the importance of observing speed limits, maintaining safe following distances and avoiding reckless decisions while driving.
“Every time you get behind the wheel, you are responsible not only for your own safety but also for the lives of everyone sharing the road with you,” she said.
“Obey speed limits, maintain a safe following distance and never allow impatience or overconfidence to influence your driving.”
