A total of 24 surgeries have been conducted at the Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) Field Hospital at Nadovu and the MV Veivueti berthed at the Lautoka Wharf as of last week.

FEMAT head Dr Luke Nasedra said 10 of the 24 surgeries were emergency caesarean (C-sections) on board the Veivueti.

“So 20 of the 24 surgeries were done on MV Veivueti and four at the field hospital,” Dr Nasedra said.

“We had 10 C-sections and we have delivered 20 babies.

“The process we currently have is that when mothers come into labour, we prep them at the field hospital and once they are ready, we move them to the boat.”

Dr Nasedra, who is one of the country’s experienced anaesthetists, said the first normal baby delivery was done at the field hospital last Friday.

He said the labour was quite advanced and it was too late to transfer the mother to the boat.

“The midwives delivered her at the field hospital, it went very well.

“All our surgeries all went quite well in the past week since we began operations on May 9.”
