The Government has allocated $1.6 million for narcotics operations in the 2026-2027 National Budget as it steps up efforts to combat the growing drug threat.

According to the Budget Estimates, the funding falls under the Ministry of Policing and Communications, which has received a total allocation of $34.2 million for the new financial year.

The Budget states that the Ministry is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight in national policing, cybersecurity, government ICT and digital transformation, while supporting the Government’s commitment to maintaining law and order and combating transnational crime.

A key focus is the operationalisation of the Counter Narcotics Bureau (CNB), which the Government says will serve as the central coordinating body for drug enforcement policy, intelligence gathering and operational coordination. The Bureau will continue to operate under the direct authority of the Ministry.

The detailed Budget Estimates show $1.6 million specifically earmarked for “Narcotics Operation” under the Ministry’s Policy and Administration Programme.

Additional funding is also allocated for Illicit Narcotic Legislation, alongside other national security initiatives, including human trafficking and critical infrastructure security.

The investment comes as Fiji continues to strengthen its response to narcotics trafficking, with the Government signalling that enhanced coordination, intelligence gathering and enforcement will be central to its strategy over the coming financial year.
