Youth empowerment must be at the centre of national priorities as drug abuse continues to affect communities and threaten the next generation of leaders, says Tacilevu district youth leader in Rewa Inosi Niubasaga.
Speaking after the Rewa Provincial Council meeting in Lokia, Mr Niubasaga said the village was investing in its young people by entrusting them with responsibilities traditionally carried out by elders.
He said the village’s young men now led traditional ceremonies and protocols, ensuring iTaukei customs and knowledge were passed on to the next generation while preparing them for future leadership roles.
“One thing we are losing today is traditional knowledge and good behaviour among children and it is sad to see,” he said.
Mr Niubasaga said with drugs becoming a growing concern, village leaders were determined to keep young people engaged in positive activities including sporting events held around the country.
He said boys and girls were being taught the correct traditional protocols so they could uphold their cultural responsibilities.
“It is important for us to start practising now because one day we will be the ones leading our people.”
Village headman Asesela Sadole said drugs remained one of the biggest challenges facing the community.
He said village bylaws now prohibited alcohol within its boundaries to help create a safer environment for young people.
Mr Sadole noted that anyone found with illegal substances would face disciplinary action under village rules.
He said action was needed now to protect young people before the problem became more difficult to address.
