FORMER inmates should be given the opportunity to return to their villages and reunite with their families to help them successfully reintegrate into society, says Tui Nayau Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba.
Speaking at the Bose Vanua ni Yasana o Lau in Suva, Ratu Tevita said traditional village support systems could play a vital role in guiding and nurturing those who had completed their prison sentences.
“When they are released and come to stay with us in the village, I believe that, as part of our tradition and the caring nature of Fijians, we must remember that these are our own family members who come from families,” he said.
“It will be easy for us to nurture and guide them because they are our own.”
Ratu Tevita said former inmates acquired valuable skills while serving their sentences and could use those skills to contribute to their communities.
“They can come and work with us, and they can also teach us what they have learnt while inside.”
“That is why I have asked the Fiji Corrections Services to take a look at reopening the Lakeba Correctional facility.”
He said allowing former inmates to return to their villages and families would be the quickest way for them to be accepted back into society.
