A total of 194 intern doctors across Fiji are facing uncertainty over posting, according to Labasa Hospital’s intern representative Dr Maca Ratabua.
Dr Ratabua said the issue was not isolated to Labasa, but part of a wider national concern affecting young doctors across the country.
“There are 91 interns in Suva, 64 in Lautoka and 39 in Labasa under the internship program, all at different stages of transition into full medical posting,” she said.
She said many interns had completed their required training blocks and contractual obligations, but were still waiting for clarity on their next appointments.
“We are putting this up so that the Fiji Medical Association can understand where we stand after this.”
The lack of clear communication on posting, she said, had left many interns uncertain about their professional future, despite years of study and structured training.
“The uncertainty remained over whether completion of training would automatically lead to posting as expected.”
She said they were seeking timely communication and structured coordination from relevant authorities to avoid prolonged uncertainty.
“We just want clarity on where we are going next.”
The emotional strain, she said, was increasing as interns waited for formal confirmation of their employment status.
She said the matter was now raised formally through correspondence to the ministry and other relevant authorities.
