You have no right to inflict violence on women and girls. This is the short, yet powerful message from Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) co-ordinator Shamima Ali to male perpetrators who have been involved in a string of attacks against women over the past few days.

“Those men who are perpetrators, I urge you to seek help,” she said.

“The outcome of your rash and brutal action are extremely grievous and harmful. And I call on all of society to stop blaming women and girls for the violence perpetrated on them. It is never their fault.”

Two separate attacks were recorded over the past few days, in Labasa and Lautoka, one of which was fatal. Both women victims were alleged to have been attacked by their partners.

Ms Ali said the centre condemned these terrible acts of violence on women’s bodies by men, especially by those who were supposed to cherish and protect them.

“This is also a terrible and sad indictment of a society that continues to condone and in fact, encourage violence through its misogynistic attitude and behaviour towards women and girls.

“I urge men to understand that you do not have any right to inflict violence on women and girls as part of your entitlement in a patriarchal society. I also encourage men who respect women and girls as equal human beings to encourage men and boys to behave better.”

Women who are experiencing domestic violence have also been encouraged to seek help through the 24-hour toll-free helpline 1560.

Those in need can also call Lifeline Fiji on 1543, Empower Pacific on 5626 or the Domestic Violence Helpline on 1560 for appropriate referrals.

Meanwhile, Minister for Women Lynda Tabuya has also sent out a stern warning to all perpetrators of domestic violence.

“The law and the legal system will hold you accountable for your actions, ensuring that justice is served for all the victims and survivors,” Ms Tabuya said.

She also said violence against women and girls was not a private matter, rather a national issue and crisis that demanded collective attention, action, and condemnation.
