Yachts have been noticed closer to villages in Vaturova, Cakaudrove, raising suspicions that they may be involved in illicit activities.

The district representative of Vaturova, Wakeni Malo, said there is an unusual presence of rental cars when yachts berth close to villages.

“We are extremely concerned about the presence of these yachts close to the villages,” Mr Malo said.

He said the residents have contacted the authorities to complain.

“We have a designated number provided by the authorities for reporting such incidents. It’s crucial for us to act swiftly.”

Mr Malo said an investigative team was dispatched to the villages to examine the yachts and their paperwork.

“Authorities checked the legitimacy of the yachts’ presence in the area,” he said, adding they were worried the villagers, especially the children, could fall victim to the drug trade.

“We are worried about the children’s future and safety.

No yachts have been found at Village in Tawake but the district rep of Tawake, Nasoni Ritaimusu, said they are concerned of their safety.

“Not only about the legality of the yachts, but also about the potential risks they pose to the safety and wellbeing of residents,” he said.

“We cannot afford to overlook any potential threat.”

Divisional Police Commander North SSP Kemueli Baledrodroka said they were aware of the yachts.

“The district reps and village heads are fully aware of the process we have in place,” SSP Baledrokadroka said, adding that law enforcement agencies were actively engaged in addressing the issue.

“We are working closely with district representatives and village leaders to investigate these matters thoroughly.”

The villagers have been advised against approaching the yachts but instead to report any suspicious activities or vessels in the vicinity.

“They are to advise us, so we can advise customs and for us to see the status of the individual yachts,” SSP Baledrokadroka said.
