The Zodiac Wyverns opened their Basketball Fiji Vodafone Cup Championship campaign with a hard-fought 31–25 win over Blaze at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva yesterday.
Captain Isabelle Peterson praised her side’s teamwork and composure in a match that went down to the wire. She admitted preparation was difficult, with limited time to build combinations and inconsistent training numbers.
“It was extremely hard to train,” she said, noting only two months together for school commitments.
Despite this, Wyverns showed resilience in the closing stages, especially in the fourth quarter.
“We came together in the fourth quarter and finished strong,” Peterson said, crediting improved chemistry.
Blaze forced turnovers and kept the game tight, but Wyverns adjusted better under pressure late.
Peerson pointed to foul trouble as a concern, but said timeouts helped the team regroup.
“We talked during timeouts and fixed mistakes quickly,” she added.
Looking ahead, she warned tougher opposition awaits in upcoming matches.
“We expect stronger teams next,” she said, urging better preparation and communication
She said experience against older players will benefit the school-age squad.
“These girls are older and more experienced, so this helps our development,” she said.
She revealed training numbers were often low, with only five to seven players attending.
Despite challenges, Wyverns started positively and aim to build momentum through consistency.
She thanked supporters for turning up at FMF Gymnasium and backing the team.
