FIJI’s waste sector accounts for about 9.7 per cent of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions, prompting the Government to strengthen systems for measuring and monitoring emissions.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change held a Waste Sector Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Targets, Mitigation Measures and Monitoring Workshop at the University of the South Pacific’s Statham Campus on Thursday.
The workshop brought together representatives from government ministries, development partners, municipal councils and other stakeholders to review waste sector targets under Fiji’s NDC 3.0.
Methane from landfills, wastewater treatment facilities, industries and farms are among the sources contributing to emissions from the sector.
Director of Climate Change Senivasa Waqairamasi said stronger action in the waste sector could provide direct benefits to communities.
A key focus was strengthening Fiji’s Monitoring, Reporting and Verification framework to improve the measurement of emissions reductions and track the effectiveness of mitigation measures.
Participants reviewed proposed monitoring protocols and indicators, including institutional responsibilities and procedures for collecting and sharing data.
The initiative is supported by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, the Center for Clean Air Policy and ImplementaSur.
The improved monitoring system will support implementation of Fiji’s NDC 3.0 waste-sector targets and help guide future climate investment and policy decisions.
