MAGISTRATE Yogesh Prasad has warned of the serious consequences of contrabands entering prisons, saying it contributes to fighting and other problems among inmates.
He made the comments after babysitter, Adi Vuniasi Waqanitoga admitted in court yesterday to attempting to smuggle 2.5 grams of marijuana and suki into the Naboro Correctional Facility for her stepbrother in May this year.
The court heard that correction officers found the contraband hidden in a tube of toothpaste.
She entered a guilty plea to a count each of unlawful entry of prohibited articles and unlawful possession of illicit drugs on her own free will.
The court also noted that Ms Waqanitoga was visiting Shalend Kumar, an inmate serving a lengthy prison sentence.
Magistrate Prasad stressed the importance of preventing prohibited items from entering prisons, noting that drugs could create wider problems within correctional facilities.
Waqanitoga will be sentenced on September 1.
