As torrential rain continued to belt most urban and rural areas yesterday, widespread flash flooding was reported across the Western Division.
For Barara flats in Nadi, the settlement was flooded with water from midnight on Sunday because of the heavy downpour.
Resident and founder of the Barara Youth Club Avinesh Singh said at around 1.30am, most of the houses were flooded with water levels rising.
Speaking to The Fiji Times yesterday, Mr Singh said farmers were affected as their vegetables were washed away.
“The main problem here is the Sabeto river bursting its banks and poor drainage in our community,” he said.
“And the current issue we have been seeing is that the water has been receding slowly and there is an issue with the road access.
“Because of the drainage system here, there is no outlet for the water.
“I urge the Minister for Public Works, if he can visit us and come and see us because this complaint has been there for long.”
Mr Singh said his club was also supporting residents during bad weather. “It is difficult to take a sick person to hospital.
“I plead with the Government of the day, if they can visit us and sort out this issue.”
Questions sent to the Minister for Public Works remained unanswered when this edition went to press.
