THE Frank Hilton Amazing Wheelbarrow Race has raised a record $250,000 to support children with disabilities across Fiji, marking the most successful fundraising campaign in the event’s 10-year history.
The amount eclipsed last year’s total of $166,000, reflecting the growing support from businesses, sponsors and the wider community for the fundraiser, which continues to change the lives of children and their families through the services provided by Frank Hilton Organisation (FHO).
A total of 25 teams lined up for this year’s race, with Fortech emerging as the overall champion after a spirited day of competition.
However, organisers said the event has always been about much more than crossing the finish line first.
Celebrating a decade since the race was first introduced, organisers highlighted the impact the fundraiser has had over the past 10 years, describing the milestone as a celebration of lives transformed through the generosity of participants and supporters.
“This represents lives supported, services delivered and futures changed,” organisers said during the prize-giving ceremony.
They acknowledged that every team, sponsor and individual who participated had contributed to improving the lives of children with disabilities by helping them access vital support services provided by FHO.
“In your wheelbarrow you have carried hope, dignity and opportunity for the children and families we serve,” organisers told participants.
The event has evolved into one of FHO’s flagship fundraising activities, bringing together corporate organisations and community groups in a unique competition while raising awareness about the needs of children living with disabilities across Fiji.
Although Fortech claimed top honours in the race itself, Harcourts was recognised as the highest fundraising team after collecting the largest amount in donations, with Begel Boys finishing second in the fundraising category.
A total of six awards were presented during the prize-giving ceremony to recognise achievements in both racing and fundraising.
Organisers thanked all 25 participating teams, sponsors, volunteers and supporters for helping make the 10th anniversary event the most successful in the history of the Wheelbarrow Race.
They said the record fundraising total would enable FHO to continue delivering essential services and support programmes to children with disabilities and their families across Fiji, ensuring more children have access to opportunities that improve their quality of life and future.
