‘We are in a crisis’ | Lack of government actions led to spread of termites – Tubuna

Assistant Minister for the Office of the Prime Minister Sakiusa Tubuna says the spread of termites over the past 16 years because of the lack of government actions and attention.

He made this comment during the Termites Taskforce Meeting at the Office of the Prime Minister this week.

“We are in a crisis,” he stressed.

“This enemy has caused millions of dollars in damage and is continuing to impact many Fijian families and businesses. I witnessed first-hand the devastation of this imported pest during my visit to Lautoka and the West last month.

“Around 150 termite infested properties have been identified in Lautoka.”

Mr Tubuna said the Coalition Government was committed to working with all stakeholders to address the issue.

“Since 2018 to 2019, Government has allocated $6.3m to Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) in general.”

He said the purpose of the meeting was for stakeholders to share views and data to better understand the extent of the issue.
