THE 2026 Coca-Cola Games will mark the second year of participation for Wainikeli Junior Secondary School, following its establishment last year.

Based on the island of Taveuni, the school continues to make steady progress on the national athletics stage.

Head of school Eneriko Qalica said despite being newcomers, the school delivered an impressive performance at this year’s Taveuni Zone meet, where 12 athletes combined to win six medals.

“Even though we were new, our school managed to achieve four gold, one silver and one bronze medals during the Taveuni Zone meet this year,” he said.

Building on last year’s achievement of qualifying two athletes for the Fiji Finals, Wainikeli has once again secured two representatives and both in the sub-junior boys’ division.

“One athlete will compete in the 200m and 400m events, while the other will take part in the shot put,” Qalica said.

Like many maritime schools, Wainikeli faces ongoing challenges with limited facilities and training grounds. However, Qalica said those constraints hadd not dampen the team’s ambition heading into the Fiji Finals.

“We are not just here to participate — we are here with the goal of taking a medal back home,” he said.

Qalica has also emphasised the importance of mindset in preparation, encouraging his athletes to remain confident and determined.

“I always encourage the boys to never lose hope, believe in themselves and give their best in their events,” he said.

He also acknowledged the unwavering support from the school management, the Wainikeli community and sponsors, crediting them for playing a vital role in the team’s journey to the national stage.
