A FIFTEEN per cent drop in water production at the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant has forced the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) to introduce overnight water rationing across several communities, with restrictions taking effect from this week.
The seven-hour supply restrictions will run daily from 9pm to 4am until further notice, as prolonged dry weather and low rainfall linked to El Nino reduce water flows into the plant.
WAF said reduced flows from the Savura Cascade and Headworks three catchments had affected the volume of raw water available for treatment, placing pressure on reservoir storage and its ability to meet customer demand.
“These valve operations are necessary to allow water levels in the Tamavua Reservoir to recover while overnight demand is lower,” WAF said.
Affected areas include higher-lying parts of Valelevu, Cunningham Stage 4, Caubati, Mead Road, Rewa Street, Tip Top, Bel Air, Wairua and Naboro.
WAF said residents and businesses in these areas may experience low water pressure, irregular supply or complete water cuts during the restriction period.
Although supply operations will be reversed at 4am, WAF warned that restoration would depend on reservoir levels and the location and elevation of affected properties.
The authority said water carting trucks would be on standby to assist affected communities, subject to operational requirements and availability.
WAF has urged households and businesses to conserve water, prioritise essential needs and keep reasonable emergency supplies as dry conditions continue.
