The need to make progress on improving water services in Fiji were re-emphasised to members of the newly-appointed Water Authority of Fiji board yesterday.

During the first meeting of the WAF board of directors, Minister for Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services Ro Filipe Tuisawau urged the board to ensure those critical works were done “as quickly as possible”.

The Minister noted he was aware of present challenges.

“I have been briefed by the previous board members and also the CEO and his team about some of the infrastructure issues and the water situation,” Ro Filipe said.

“I look forward to you as the new board to progress the completion of critical projects like Rewa River Water Supply on time and deliver on the vision and mission of the Water Authority of Fiji, as well as our strategic plans,” he added.

WAF board chairperson Savenaca Seniloli is also keen on the members’ “unique set of talents and relevant expertise” to guide the authority’s management.

As representatives of the authority’s governing and executive board, he reminded the team of the high expectations and accountability required, particularly from stakeholders and customers alike.

“I wish to remind all of you of the statement by the honourable Prime Minister in announcing our appointment, he expects us the board, to immediately (work) on the critical issues that WAF continues to face and work closely with the Government and key stakeholders,” Mr Seniloli was quoted saying in a statement from WAF.

“It is very encouraging, Sir, that you mentioned about being open to feedback. We are here to help each other. We understand that WAF has its fair share of strategic challenges.

“With every challenge there lies an opportunity to learn, to grow, and through this a mindset of continuous improvement, with this mindset starting from this group and the management, we will lift the Water Authority of Fiji to greater heights.”

The other members of the board are Amit Singh, Vula Vakacegu, Semi Leiwere, Graham Dooley and Mele Rakai, who were also taken on an induction session, followed by their first board meeting.
