THERE has been an increase in riverbank erosion and flooding in Vunivutu, Macuata, with residents calling for urgent government intervention as the situation continues to deteriorate.

Resident Josaia Rasoso said the soil beside the river mouth had been steadily eroding, a problem he claims had never been experienced at this scale before.

“The soil beside the river mouth of Vunivutu has been eroding. Also, during heavy rain the village would be flooded, something that never used to happen before. We are calling on government intervention.

“Each heavy downpour worsens the situation, with sections of land collapsing into the river.

“Access to parts of the village has become increasingly difficult during periods of flooding.”

Concerns have been raised with authorities, however, residents believe little progress had been made in addressing the issue.

Community members are now calling for relevant stakeholders to assess the area and develop long-term mitigation measures.

Mr Rasoso said the village’s evacuation centre, which was constructed by the Government to provide safety during disasters was now being affected by flooding, with water accumulating at its front during heavy rain.

“This is the very place people are meant to run to during disaster.”

He called for immediate attention to ensure both their homes and emergency facilities are protected from further damage.

Attempts to get comments from acting commissioner Northern Apolosi Lewaqai were unsuccessful.
