THE life of the father of my children mattered.
These were the words of Queenie Osbourne after police confirmed Jone Vakarisi’s death was being treated as an alleged murder.
“As the mother of his children, we carry the unbearable responsibility of explaining this loss to our children and family who must now grow without their father,” said Ms Osbourne in a statement.
“Our extended family including his parents and loved ones are navigating grief compounded by uncertainty and unanswered questions.
“The emotional and psychological toll is immense and ongoing.”
Ms Osbourne called for an independent and transparent investigation on the death of Vakarisi.
“In light of these developments, we respectfully but firmly call for a fully independent, transparent and impartial investigation into the circumstances of his death, a full disclosure of all findings, including medical, forensic, and custodial records, accountability for any actions or omissions that contributed to his death, responsible public communication and restraint to prevent further harm to our children and family and assurance that no other family will endure such a loss under similar circumstances.
“We urge all authorities and institutions to treat this matter with seriousness, integrity and humanity it demands.”
Meanwhile, investigators have begun their inquiry into the alleged murder.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said investigators were actively pursuing all lines of inquiry.
“The investigation into the death of Jone Vakarisi has been classified as murder,” she said.
“Investigators are in the process of gathering information to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the victim’s death.
“The heads of the two institutions are reaffirming their commitment towards the conduct of a thorough investigation, appealing once again to members of the public to allow the investigative process to run its course.”
