AYURVEDA must be used responsibly and should complement evidence-based modern healthcare, Minister for Health Dr Atonio Lalabalavu said on Wednesday last week.

Speaking at the 11th Ayurveda Day celebration at the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre in Suva, Dr Lalabalavu said traditional medicine had an important role in promoting preventive health and healthier lifestyles.

“I wish to emphasise that Ayurveda should complement evidence-based modern healthcare,” he said.

“Ayurvedic medicines and therapies should be used responsibly and, where appropriate, under the guidance of qualified practitioners.”

Dr Lalabalavu said Ayurveda’s focus on prevention, balanced living and sustainable wellness was increasingly relevant as countries sought to build healthier communities.

He said Ayurveda recognised the close relationship between the body, mind, lifestyle, diet and environment.

“Prevention of disease and promotion of good health are among the principal objectives of Ayurveda.

“It encourages appropriate diet, regular physical activity, adequate rest, mental well-being and a disciplined daily routine.”

He said Ayurveda Day also provided an opportunity to engage young people and encourage them to adopt healthier and more balanced lifestyles.

The 11th Ayurveda Day was celebrated in Fiji and around the world under the theme “Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow”.

Dr Lalabalavu said the celebration also reflected the enduring cultural and people-to-people ties between Fiji and India.

He acknowledged the High Commission of India for bringing the community together to promote awareness of Ayurveda and its contribution to preventive and holistic healthcare.
