Unpaid contributions delay workers’ retirement savings – FNPF

The Fiji National Provident Fund has announced a special amnesty period allowing employers to settle outstanding contribution payments without penalties, warning that unpaid arrears continue to affect the retirement savings of Fijian workers.

The amnesty period began yesterday and will run until October 31, 2026.

It applies to unpaid FNPF contributions owed up to November 2024 and is intended to help employers clear historical arrears while improving long-term compliance with contribution requirements.

Under the initiative, all penalties on outstanding contributions will be fully waived.

FNPF chief executive officer Viliame Vodonaivalu said the amnesty was aimed at giving employers a fair opportunity to resolve outstanding matters and return to compliance.

“This amnesty provides employers with a final and fair opportunity to put historical matters behind them and move forward on a clean, compliant footing,” Mr Vodonaivalu said.

He stressed that unpaid contributions had direct consequences for workers and their retirement security.

“Every outstanding dollar represents delayed retirement savings for our members,” he said.

“Clearing these arrears is not just a compliance issue, it is a matter of protecting workers’ futures.”

Mr Vodonaivalu said the initiative formed part of broader efforts by the Fund to improve contribution compliance, address legacy balances and reinforce a culture of timely and accurate payments.

He urged employers to engage with the Fund early during the amnesty period and work collaboratively to settle outstanding obligations.

“We strongly urge employers to come forward early, engage with us constructively, and take advantage of this time-bound opportunity,” he said.

The FNPF chief warned that stronger enforcement action would follow once the amnesty period ended.

“After the amnesty period, FNPF will move firmly to enforce compliance,” he said.

The Fund reiterated that timely payment of contributions was essential to safeguarding members’ retirement benefits and maintaining confidence in Fiji’s national superannuation system.

Employers who remain non-compliant after October 31 may face recovery and enforcement action under existing laws.

FNPF is encouraging businesses to use the amnesty period to resolve all outstanding contribution issues and avoid future penalties or legal action.Top of Form
