Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube has stepped up attacks on government’s performance and policy delivery, saying implementation had fallen well short of election commitments and accused the administration of weak leadership.
In response, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said the former Reserve Bank governor was speaking outside his area of political experience.
He said he did not know what was meant by “weak leadership” given Mr Narube’s background in economics rather than political governance.
“I do not understand what he means by weak leadership, whether it’s at the Reserve Bank level where he has experience – not in the political level, where he has not had any experience,” Mr Rabuka said when asked to respond to statements made during a talanoa session in Auckland.
Mr Narube had said the problems and fundamental issues faced by Fijians remained and were getting worse because of the problem of weak leadership.
He said many voters felt “betrayed” by unfulfilled election promises.
“They went into government on the back of those promises, and each of those major promises, I believe they have just implemented 2 per cent of them,” Mr Narube said.
He criticised the Government’s handling of issues such as the cost of living, saying rising prices are placing continued pressure on households.
“This Government is losing the battle on every front.”
Mr Narube said the upcoming election would be different from 2022, arguing that voters now had a clearer view of the government’s performance in office.
