SIROMI Turaga has resigned as Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice following the circulation of an explicit video allegedly linked to him.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed the resignation yesterday, saying he had accepted Mr Turaga’s offer to step down from Cabinet.
Mr Rabuka said no one would be appointed to replace Mr Turaga at this stage, with legal advice to be provided directly by the Solicitor-General’s Office.
He said he had not pressed Mr Turaga for a detailed explanation of the video, having accepted his apology and resignation.
“When I asked him about the video, he straightforwardly came up with an apology and offered to resign from Cabinet,” Mr Rabuka said.
Despite his resignation, Mr Turaga will remain a member of the People’s Alliance Party (PAP) and Parliament.
“He is still PAP. He is still a member of Parliament. And he is still involved in the PAP discussions.”
The resignation comes as the Government continues work on the proposed Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, with Parliament considering changes to Fiji’s supreme law and preparations for a national referendum. When asked how Mr Turaga’s departure from Cabinet would affect ongoing legislative and legal matters, including consultations on the Constitution Amendment Bill, Mr Rabuka said Mr Turaga remained available to assist.
“He is still available for that.”
Mr Rabuka said Cabinet also had members with legal qualifications, although they were not constitutionally qualified to serve as Attorney-General.
He said Mr Turaga’s resignation should not affect the referendum process.
