Fiji sevens gold medallist Asaeli Tuivuaka has signed a new contract with Zebre Rugby club in Italy.

According to a media statement released by the club stating that it has reached an agreement for the 2021/22 season with Fijian Tuivuaka, fresh Olympic champion with the sevens Fijian national team who defeated the All Blacks finalists 27-12 at the Tokyo 2020 edition.

The Namosi native also known as “The Tank” made his debut for Fiji at the Canada leg of the 2018/2019 World Sevens.

In 2016, Asaeli ran on the ground in Namosi colours for the provincial Skipper Cup championship.

The following year he joined the fledgling Fijian Drua franchise, a team set up to allow the best prospects of Fijian rugby to compete in the National Rugby Championship, Australia’s top domestic tournament.

Also in 2017, the powerful player — 176cm tall by 104kg weight — received his fi rst callup with the Fijian Warriors, the second national selection of the island country.

Tuivuaka is expected in Parma in September and is about to make his debut with multicolours in the two international tournaments United Rugby Championship and EPCR Challenge Cup.

Zebre Rugby Club president Michele Dalai said they’re happy to give the city and the fans an Olympic champion such as Tuivuaka.

In a statement, Tuivuaka replied that he was very excited to join a club of the calibre of Zaebre Rugby.

“After the Olympics I received a couple of proposals, but this was the one that convinced me the most,” he said.
