The Cambridge Nadroga Senior rugby side has made a triumphant return to the top, ending a two-year wait for victory with a thrilling 24-22 win over McDonald’s Nadi in the Skipper Cup final at Churchill Park in Lautoka yesterday.
Nadroga’s victory marked a special comeback for the Stallions, whose last triumph came in 2024 at Ratu Cakobau Park against Naitasiri.
For captain Manueli Ratuniyarawa, the hard-fought victory was particularly meaningful after being away from the team for a year.
Ratuniyarawa said the team had spoken about reclaiming the title from the beginning of their campaign and was delighted to finally achieve their goal.
“It feels special. We talked about it during the start, and finally getting it after two years has made it really feels special for us,” he said.
The Stallions showed tremendous character to overcome a determined Nadi outfit, especially after trailing at halftime.
Ratuniyarawa said composure was the key message delivered to the players during the break as they worked to get back into the contest.
“The message was to stay composed. We knew we had to play within our limits and stick to our game plan,” he said.
Ratuniyarawa also impressed with the contribution of the team’s younger players, who stood up when the pressure was at its highest.
He said several members of the squad were from ttireless year’s Under-20 but demonstrated the maturity and determination required at senior level.
“I’m really happy with them. Most of them just were in the Under-20 last year and the year before, so they really stepped up when needed. Hats off to them,” he said.
Ratuniyarawa also acknowledged the strong support from Nadroga fans who turned out in numbers at Churchill Park to cheer the team to victory.
He said their encouragement had played an important role in lifting the players throughout the final.
