Melbourne Storm forward Tui Kamikamica believes the NRL trial match against the Knights on Saturday is only the beginning of a long journey.

The Storm and Knights created history over the weekend at Churchill Park in Lautoka as the first two NRL teams to play on Fijian soil.

Results and competition aside, many people from the western division, particularly rugby league fanatics turned up in numbers to catch a glimpse of their idols.

Kamikamica’s parents and grandparents travelled from Somosomo in Taveuni to watch him play on home ground after 12 years.

“This is a good start for a trial game. Hopefully in the years to come, we can have a Storm home game here in the future but in saying that it’s a pretty good start to finally getting an NRL game in Fiji,” he said.

“We Fijians we love our rugby no matter what code it is. It’s pretty much in our blood. We got church, family then footy so when it comes to either rugby union or rugby league, we’ll turn up in numbers because we are very passionate fans.

Kamikamica is fit and raring to get the 2024 season underway as they brace for the Panthers in round one of the NRL Telstra Premiership.

They meet on March 8 at 9.05pm.
