THE Fiji Corrections Service is calling on the public to remain patient and place trust in the criminal justice system as it works to strengthen transparency, accountability and institutional credibility.

In an interview with The Fiji Times online portal The Lens@177, Acting Commissioner Auta Moceisuva acknowledged ongoing challenges within the corrections system but said efforts were underway to rebuild public confidence.

“We are also working to make sure that we bring back the trust of the community, to believe in the system, believe in the officers that are there,” he said.

“That means we have to be transparent, we have to be accountable.”

He said the service was strengthening its internal response mechanisms to ensure incidents are addressed promptly rather than reactively.

“It’s not that someone finds out that someone has been assaulted then we do an investigation.

“On our part, I think we have to respond to each incident as and when they arise.”

Mr Moceisuva said timely reporting and proper communication channels were essential to improving public confidence in the institution.

“And report these incidents in an unusual channel.

“In that way, it’s going to bring back the public trust and the confidence in the system that we are indeed accountable, we are transparent, and we are responsible to the public at large as a criminal justice system, in the treatment of offenders.”
