PRIME Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says responsibility for deciding what happens to recommendations on the removal of immunity provisions in the 2013 Constitution rests with the Constitution Review Commission.

Mr Rabuka made the comment after the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) called for the removal of the immunity provisions in its submission to the commission.

“Nobody has the right to be making their personal or group decisions because those recommendations were made to the commission and it’s up to the commission what they do with it,” he said.

However, Mr Rabuka welcomed the military’s decision to make the submission.

“I just welcome the fact that they have made the submission.”

The RFMF, in its final submission on Thursday, recommended the removal of the immunity provisions, saying they have created a culture of impunity. It also proposed a truth and reconciliation process as part of wider constitutional reforms.

The immunity provisions protect those involved in the 2000 and 2006 coups and the period of military-backed rule that followed, and remain among the most debated parts of the 2013 Constitution.
