Three-phase review

THE Ministry of Education has undertaken a review of its systems aimed at delivering quality education.

In an interview, Education Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy said the review was divided into three phases: Content of the curriculum; teacher’s attitude towards delivering lessons; and an improved learning environment.

“In the education sector we have undertaken reforms in three pillars, which are content review, delivery and classroom environment,” Mr Reddy said.

“We need to ensure that we have the right content so the product we get out of our secondary and university levels are second to none.

“Our children are competing with international global markets, children from other countries and within Fiji so competition is there and we have to ensure our children are adequately prepared.”

Mr Reddy said it was imperative to have the right curriculum which was why history classes of other countries would no longer be included.

“We need to revise this curriculum and major work will be done next year.

“Pillar two is about delivery and we need to ensure our teachers have the right attitude, the right mind and are qualified to deliver.

“Teachers also need to be adequately prepared.”

The learning environment is also part of the review.

Mr Reddy said schools should have a library, computer labs and good classrooms.

“Ensuring we have the right learning environment is important for our children and we need to have a library, computer labs and classrooms that don’t have leaking roofs,” he said.

“The Bainimarama Government will deliver the best to all children in Fiji ensuring their dreams are met.”
