A 39-year-old teacher appeared in the Taveuni Magistrate’s Court today for allegedly abducting a Year 10 student.

Ronal Ronish Lal was released on bail when the matter was called before resident magistrate Semi Babitu.

He has been formally charged with one count of abduction and is expected to reappear in court on June 24, 2026.

It is alleged that Lal and the student had been communicating via Messenger where they discussed plans to be together.

The messages were reportedly discovered by his wife, who then informed the school principal.

On the night of June 7, 2026, it is alleged that Lal was found with the student inside his vehicle near her home.

The matter was later reported to police, who carried out investigations.
