Government is looking at getting COVID-19 vaccines into Fiji as soon as possible, says Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
He said getting people vaccinated would “have an enormous impact on our ability to welcome tourists to Fiji”.
“As permanent secretary for Health has mentioned, we have to ensure that there is WHO certification on whichever vaccine we use,” said Mr Sayed-Khaiyum.
“You know there is also a queue by various countries in respect of the accessibility.
“We had a meeting a couple of days ago in which we have highlighted the importance of Fiji getting access to those vaccines as soon as possible.”
The A-G said the Health Ministry was in talks with different companies and development partners on obtaining the vaccines. “We want our vaccination program to start as soon as possible and the Ministry of Health is currently in talks with different companies and development partners.
“From our perspective, it is critically important that we are able to position ourselves to get the vaccines there as soon as possible. People will feel safe to come to Fiji if they know that the people are vaccinated.”
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said getting Fijians vaccinated would also open up economic potential for the country by getting borders and hotels to fully open.
